Jangdok Islet

Jangdok Islet, located in Yonghung Bay, is a long concrete pier connected to the Wonsan docks. The pier stretches roughly 1.5 kilometers out into the sea and is exposed to the elements where on a windy day the waves can crash over the walkway. On calmer days, vendors set up their stalls along the pier to sell the fresh seafood caught by local fisherman.

The pier ends at the Changdokdo lighthouse, which was built by the Japanese in 1919 during the colonial period to aid their trading endeavours. The lighthouse is now featured on a North Korean stamp.

Jangdok Islet itself is quite narrow and banked by rocks, but it presents a fantastic opportunity to take in the sea breeze, get a view back onto the picturesque Wonsan city and rub shoulders with locals as they head out (often by bicycle!) for a fresh seafood barbecue. It’s not unheard of for tourists to be invited over to the picnic to partake in some soju, dancing and singing!
