Air Koryo – North Korea’s National Airline

Air Koryo is North Korea’s only airline and has a history of over 50 years in flight.

Air Koryo currently operates internationally scheduled flights between Pyongyang, China (Beijing, Shenyang, and Shanghai) and Russia (Vladivostok).

In the past, there have been scheduled flights between Thailand (Bangkok), Macau and Kuwait, as well as charter flights to and from Malaysia (Kuala Lumpur), Singapore and a handful of other countries.

Air Koryo operates domestic flights between Pyongyang and Mt. Paektu (Samjiyon), Mt. Chilbo (Orang), Sinuiju (Uiji), Hamhung (Sondok), and Wonsan (Kalma).

** UPDATE (May 5, 2018): ‘Pyongyang Time’ has been abolished. The DPRK is back to GMT+9. All schedules below have been updated to reflect this.

** UPDATE (August 8, 2019): Flight timings between Shanghai (PVG) and Pyongyang (FNJ) have been marginally changed. The schedule below has been updated to reflect this.

** UPDATE (January 22, 2020): As at Wednesday, 22^nd January 2020, foreign travel to the DPRK has been temporarily suspended as a precautionary measure to protect against the spread of the coronavirus.

** UPDATE (February, 2020): All Air Koryo international passenger flights were suspended by early February 2020 as the DPRK enforces further border restrictions in response to the Covid-19 pandemic.

** UPDATE (August 22, 2023): Air Koryo have operated their first passenger flight since the DPRK borders were restricted in response to the Covid pandemic. The flight departed Pyongyang (FNJ) and arrived into Beijing (PEK) approximately 9am local time.

** UPDATE (August 25, 2023): The first passenger flight between Pyongyang (FNJ) and Vladivostok (VVO) since the pandemic has been operated by Air Koryo. The flight departed Pyongyang and arrived into Vladivostok approximately 11:15am local time.

** UPDATE (May 2024): As at May 2024, Air Koryo are operating regular scheduled flights between Pyongyang (FNJ) and Beijing (PEK), Shenyang (SHE) and Vladivostok (VVO).

** UPDATE (March 30, 2026): Air China resumed its passenger route between Beijing (PEK) and Pyongyang (FNJ) for the first time since early 2020. The flight departed approximately 8am local time and arrived 10:40am local time. Flights are scheduled weekly, on Monday.

** UPDATE (April 2026): As at April 2026, Air Koryo are operating regular flights between Beijing (PEK), Shenyang (SHE) and Vladivostok (VVO) with infrequent charter flights to Shanghai (PVG). General tourism to the DPRK has not resumed. These flights are serving North Korean nationals, foreigners with DPRK business visas and Russian nationals, who have been permitted for tourism since February 2024.

Monday/Thursday/Friday flights run only seasonally:
**Friday flights to and from Beijing will operate from July to October.
**Monday flights to and from Beijing will operate from April to October.
**Thursday flights to and from Beijing are often canceled during December and January.

Shenyang, China – Pyongyang

Flights to and from Shenyang often do not operate during December and January.

Flights to and from Shanghai flights typically only run between April and August.

Terms and Conditions

• Tickets are valid for date change one year from the date of issue unless there is a restriction on the validity of the ticket, subject to applicable change fees.
• An infant under the age of 2 must be accompanied by an adult.
• Such infant is entitled to a 90% discount of the applicable adult fare but cannot occupy an individual seat.
• Children from the age of 2 to 11 are entitled to a 25% discount of the applicable adult fare and are entitled to individual seats.

Baggage

• Each passenger may carry-on one piece of baggage that is suitable for placing in the closed overhead rack or under the passenger seat.
• The total sum of its three dimensions must not exceed 115cm (45inches).
• The baggage liability of Air Koryo is limited to US$20 per kg of checked baggage.
• Air Koryo assumes no liability for unchecked baggage, fragile or perishable articles.
• Liability for loss, delay of, or damage to baggage is limited unless a higher value is declared in advance and additional charges are paid.

The free baggage allowances are as follows:

• Business class: 30kg (66 lbs)
• Economy class: 23kg (50lbs)

In excess of such allowances, excess baggage charges must be paid: 20RMB per kg of excess from Beijing to Pyongyang and 2 Euros per kg from Pyongyang to Beijing.

Dangerous articles, as defined below and in the IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations, shall not be carried within, or as part of passengers’ baggage:

• Compressed gases (flammable, non-flammable and poisonous) such as camping gas
• Corrosives (such as acids, alkalis and wet cell batteries)
• Etiologic agents
• Explosives, munitions, fireworks and flares
• Flammable liquids and solids such as lighter or heating fuels, matches and articles which are easily ignited.
• Oxidizing materials (such as bleaching powder and peroxides)
• Poisonous materials
• Radioactive materials
• Other restricted articles (such as mercury, magnetized materials, offensive or irritating materials

In-Flight Service

• Air Koryo provides a selection of unique newspapers, magazines and television programming.
• Complimentary meals and beverages are served on international flights.
• Smoking is prohibited on all Air Koryo flights.
