In this comprehensive special tour of North Korea, you’ll join the Victory Day festivities on July 27 and see absolutely everything from the political sites of Pyongyang to the historical city of Kaesong and coastal port life of Wonsan! We’ll delve into the local industry on a visit to Nampho and even visit Pyongsong, often referred to as North Korea’s ‘Silicon Valley’. This will be one life-changing week sure to satisfy some of the curiosity you have in this fascinating country!

DAY 1 – DEPART FOR PYONGYANG

At 11am, meet us at Terminal 2, Air Koryo counter E, of the Beijing Capital International Airport to check in for our 2pm flight. We will hand out your DPRK visas at this time. We will then fly to Pyongyang, the capital of the DPRK and home to many of the most iconic monuments and political sites. Our Korean tour guides will be meet us at the airport with a warm welcome.

Our first stop will be the Fatherland Liberation War Martyrs Cemetery, the final resting place of fallen Korean War heroes. This site is iconic for its striking monument of a bayonet. We will then check into the Koryo Hotel, our deluxe accommodation in the heart of Pyongyang popular with local residents, foreign diplomats, delegations, NGOs. Our welcome dinner will be in style at the Koryo Hotel’s top floor revolving restaurant! Take an optional visit to the Kaeson Youth Amusement Park where the thrill seekers among us can brave the rides with Pyongyang locals on a night out.

DAY 2 – KAESONG & THE DMZ

Take a morning drive through the countryside to the historic city of Kaesong. We will head for the DMZ where we’ll hear from our guides a perspective of the Korean War that often gets discredited or unheard. At the DMZ, explore Panmunjom, shake hands at the exact place that the Armistice Agreement was signed between UN forces and the DPRK, and wave hello to the South at the blue houses in the Joint Security Area. Then head to the Koryo History Museum, a UNESCO site, to learn about the Koryo Dynasty (where the name Korea originates). You’ll also have a chance to pick from the most varied range of postcards in the country at the Koryo Stamp Shop.

For lunch, enjoy Pansanggi, a historic Kaesong cuisine traditionally served for royalty. Stop at the original Sonjuk Bridge, a UNESCO site. On return to the capital, visit the Grand People’s Study House, an extensive library used to further education and the heart of study on the national Juche ideology. The viewing deck here provides a great photo opportunity of the Kim Il Sung Square and the Taedong River! Walk in the Kim Il Sung Square, the 3rd largest public square in the world and home to many of the North Korean military parades broadcast internationally. Head over to the Foreign Languages Bookshop which provides the best chance in the DPRK to pick up postcards, publications, posters and other trinkets that make perfect souvenirs.

DAY 3 – VICTORY DAY!

Begin the morning with a visit to the Mansudae Grand Monument, an important site famous for its large, bronze statues of President Kim Il Sung and Chairman Kim Jong Il. It is customary to bow and lay flowers here. Stroll through Mansudae Fountain Park, a serene meeting spot for students in their free time and often used as a backdrop for wedding photos. It wouldn’t be quite Victory Day without a special visit to the Victorious Fatherland War Museum, where we will get a guided tour of the war remnants, exhibits, and dioramas and learn about the Korean war, from the North Korean perspective! We will also visit and board the ‘American Spy Ship’ USS Pueblo docked beside the museum.

After lunch, we will go walking on Moran Hill, a park place buzzing with festivities as locals celebrate the Victory Day with picnics and dancing! Learn about the DPRK’s defining ideology, the Juche philosophy, on a visit to the iconic Tower of Juche Idea. For those who wish to take the lift 150-meters to the top, you’ll enjoy the best views in Pyongyang city! We’ll have a photo stop at the massive Monument to Party Founding, built to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the foundation of the Workers’ Party of Korea, recognizable by the communist hammer and sickle. Head deep underground to take a 5-stop ride on the Pyongyang Metro, the deepest metro in the world, filled with mosaics, monuments, and plaques commemorating the DPRK’s revolutionary history. Stop at the Arch of Triumph, the world’s largest triumphal arch. From the top, we will get our first panorama view of Pyongyang city! Take part in the day’s festivities which will include an unforgettable mass dance event in Kim Il-Sung Square where you’ll even get to join and celebrate with the locals if you wish. We’ll be attending any other festivities that are available on the day.

Test your marksman skills with the guidance of a military officer at the Meari Shooting Range. Get the chance to taste local Korean draft beers and celebrate Victory Day, and our last night, at the Taedonggang Microbrewery.

DAY 4 – PYONGYANG CITY TOUR

Start the morning off with a visit to the Kumsusan Palace of the Sun, the grand mausoleum where the late leaders lie in state inside glass sarcophagi (closed in May and June; formal dress required). Visit the Mangyongdae Native House, the famous birthplace of President Kim Il Sung. We will then visit Kwangbok Supermarket, a five-story department complex filled with local and imported product and the only place in Pyongyang where foreigners are able to exchange and use the local North Korean Won.

After lunch, we’ll begin our drive to Nampho, an industrial port city on the west coast. We’ll get a good look at rural North Korea on the way. Visit the Chongsanri Cooperative Farm, part of a system of collective farms catering to the agriculture needs of surrounding communities. We will meet a local caretaker here, see inside their home and visit the impressive bronze monument of President Kim Il-Sung with local farmers. We will stop at the Kangso Mineral Water Factory, a famous name in North Korea, to get a glimpse into the workings of the local industry (pending availability). Then it’s onward to the coastline and the jewel of Nampho, the West Sea Barrage, a massive dam and tidal wall built in five years across an 8-kilometer section of the rough sea. This is an architectural feat known to all North Koreans.

Return to Pyongyang for a dinner in style as we cruise Pyongyang’s Taedong River aboard the Taedonggang Dining Boat (10 USD extra)!

DAY 5 – WONSAN

This morning, we’ll depart for the city of Wonsan. There will be a short stop at the Sinpyong Tea House for coffee or tea in the fresh mountain air. Our first destination will be the grand Masikryong Hotel inside the Masikryong Ski Resort complex that was built at the order of Marshal Kim Jong-Un in 2013. We will check-in, have lunch and have a quick tour of the grounds.

Drive 40 minutes into the city of Wonsan and have a guided tour of the Revolutionary Sites that played a prominent role in the fight against Japanese occupation and the Korean War. Tour the facilities and interact with the children at the Songdowon International Children’s Camp, a typical socialist-style summer camp. We’ll walk in the sea breeze along Wonsan harbor to the Wonsan City Docks which includes a central square and bronze monuments to the Great Leaders. Walk along the pier between dozens of fisherman to the Jangdok Islet where you can buy seafood that was caught just seconds ago by local vendors. We will get a picturesque view of the Wonsan skyline from here. Then enjoy a city walk through Wonsan before settling in for dinner at a local seafood restaurant. Afterward, return to the cozy Masikryong Hotel for a great nights sleep!

DAY 6 – MASIKRYONG AND RETURN TO PYONGYANG

Wake in the mountains and watch the sunrise from your private balcony before enjoying a hearty breakfast made with locally sourced ingredients. Before we depart, we will take the new Masikryong ski lift to the peak for an incredible morning view over the untouched mountain ranges (the ski lift is optional and there is a $15 fee to be paid at the ski lift.)

On our way back to Pyongyang, we will go via the stunning Ullim Waterfall discovered relatively recently by the Korean People’s Army. It’s a waterfall you will hear well before you see. If it’s a nice day we will enjoy a picnic lunch here.

On return to Pyongyang, with a unique bicycle ride through the capital! This will take us down the elaborate Mirae (Future) Scientists and Changjon Streets and even right through the Kim Il-Sung Square.

DAY 7 – PYONGSONG

First, visit the Mansudae Art Studio, the most prestigious fine arts studio and gallery in North Korea. This studio is the only one given permission to depict the Great Leaders in monuments, murals, and mosaics. We recommend getting the ink block paintings here. We’ll then drive to the city of Pyongsong, often referred to as the ‘Silicon Valley of North Korea’. First stop will be Pyongsong Square, the heart of the city headed by two grand monuments of the Great Leaders.

After lunch, witness Pyongsong come to life as we drive through the city and into the countryside to reach the Paeksong Revolutionary Site. This is a tranquil forested area where Kim Il Sung University was relocated during the Korean War. It is now commemorated by preserved buildings, murals and monuments. Visit the Pyongsong Primary School where we will get to meet and interact with an English class (school supply donations are very welcome!), then enjoy a special musical performance. The children will also be eager to show off their sporting skills to you here.

Return to Pyongyang for dinner at the Korean BBQ restaurant, a favorite among locals where we will cook our own meats at the table!

DAY 8 – FAREWELL

Morning departure to Beijing. Estimated time of arrival is 10:00 a.m. local time. Please reserve any connecting flights departing after 2pm local time to allow sufficient time for immigration/customs clearance, baggage claim, re-check-in and security.
